Zofran (ondansetron) is an anti‐nausea prescription drug manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline approved for use in the treatment of nausea in chemotherapy and post‐surgery patients.

It works by blocking the serotonin in the brain, which is the chemical which triggers nausea. It was first released in 1991 following FDA approval for that use and has provided GlaxoSmithKline with billions of dollars in revenue since its release.

What Is the Problem With Zofran?

Sometime around 2002, GlaxoSmithKline began promoting the use of Zofran as a way to combat morning sickness in pregnant women. This was done despite the fact that the FDA had not approved Zofran for such use, nor had there been any properly controlled studies conducted for that use. Since those promotions, there have been hundreds of thousands of prescriptions written each year for the use of Zofran by pregnant women.

Unfortunately, there have also been over 500 reports of birth defects thought to be associated with the use of Zofran, primarily in the form of cleft palates and congenital heart defects, and this has resulted in the filing of numerous lawsuits against GlaxoSmithKline for failure to warn of the risk of defects and for promoting Zofran for unapproved uses.

Zofran Litigation

In 2012, GlaxoSmithKline was fined some $3 Billion for its illegal promotion of Zofran and other drugs. There are currently over 100 pending drug lawsuits filed on behalf of children born with birth defects thought to be attributed to the Zofran taken by their mothers during pregnancy.
